Guidelines for Open Burning
Guidelines are designed to act as a general rule for open burning in the Town of Mendon.
• Open burning cannot create a nuisance.
• Open burning cannot cause a safety hazard.
• Open burning pile shall be reasonable in size (10 ft. x 10 ft. x 4 ft.)
• Open burning piles shall not contain any hazardous materials, construction or
destruction debris, asphalt material or tires.
• Burning materials shall not be larger than 4 inches in diameter.
• Open burning piles shall be placed in an open area with a minimum 50 ft. radius from
any exposure. (Exposure: buildings, tall grass, fields, farmers crops, public
roadways, woods or brushy areas)
• Open burning shall not start before 8:00 a.m. and shall be extinguished by 6:00 p.m.
• All open burning shall be supervised by at least one adult.
• A water supply shall be provided to area of fire. (i.e: garden hose or portable tank)
• The Fire Marshal may impose stricter guidelines noted on permit.
• Permit Fee of $25.00 must be paid to Town Clerk prior to issuance of this Permit.

NOTE:  This permit is not valid until you get the approval in the mail/email.  The Fire Marshal may  need more information prior to approval.
